I am honored and privileged to have the opportunity to serve as the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Grameen Bank since March 2020. As we know, the phenomenal achievement of this bank in providing effective solution to poverty alleviation in Bangladesh was globally recognized by the Nobel Committee by awarding it the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.
Grameen is a bank for the poor, and its visionary path lies in alleviating poverty for the poor, assetless, economically and socially disadvantaged destitute population of the country. Since 2020 GB has undergone a remarkable transformation and growth in Bangladesh. Currently GB has more than 10 million borrower members in its target clientele group, and it is directly and indirectly involved in positive socio-economic transformation of lives of more than 40 million destitute people of Bangladesh.
We take genuine pride in highlighting here the findings of a survey conducted by GB in September 2022 which revealed that more than two-third (67.4%) of its borrower members have been successful in coming out of the poverty level. This is surely a very remarkable achievement of this bank. GB is the pioneer microfinance institution, and it is highly recognized as a successful role model for microfinance operations globally.
We are proud that this bank has been playing a proactive, positive and robust role in the positive socio-economic transformation and growth of the country. Bangladesh is now globally recognized as a “role model” of development, and this massive positive socio-economic transformation and growth have taken place under the visionary leadership of our Honorable Prime Minister HE Sheikh Hasina. We wish a very successful, sustained journey of GB in the years to come.
