Tree plantation is one of the eighteen founding decisions of Grameen Bank's social development agenda to the member families, which were taken in 1984. Initially GB management used to supply saplings to the members during the planting season and also motivate them to become entrepreneurs to start plant nurseries.
In 2021 as a part of the National Tree Plantation Campaign, initiated by the Honorable Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, Grameen Bank has implemented tree planting activities successfully with the spontaneous participation of GB members and employees. 70 million saplings of forest and fruit trees have been planted on the occasion of Bangabandhu's Birth Centenary, including 9.7 million in a single day on the anniversary of the Martyrdom of Bangabandhu, and 1.4 million in one hour on the occasion of Sheikh Russel Day. Grameen Bank has planted a total of 159.5 million trees till August, 2022.
