The people of Bangladesh have to deal with various natural disasters every year due to their geographical location. Floods, like natural disasters, cause irreparable damage to our borrower members every year. The magnitude of each of the floods in 1987, 1988, and 1998 in Bangladesh was huge. In addition, we are currently going through the Corona pandemic. Whenever a natural disaster strikes, Grameen Bank always offers its beneficiaries humanitarian assistance. Grameen bank provided food aid to 20556 extremely poor beggar families (struggling members in the language of Grameen Bank) during the peak of the Corona pandemic with the decision and direct cooperation of the present Board of Directors. Each family has been provided 30 KG of rice, 4 kg of pulses, 6 kg of potatoes, 2 kg of salt, 4 kg of onion, 2 liters of oil, 4 soaps, and BDT600 in cash. Due to the members' plight and the recession in the business sector, their instalment payments were stopped for different periods and capital assistance loans were extended with easy terms to help increase business activity. Grameen Bank provides the following assistance during various disaster times.
i) Distribute saline, alum, pony extracting tablets, char, pulses, salt, puffed rice, molasses, matches, candles, etc.
ii) Take affected members to a safe place.
iii) Arrange for treatment and health camps.
iv) If it is not possible to purchase and supply food items, then pay cash from the Disaster Rehabilitation Fund.
v) Provide home loan under rehabilitation program for urgent home repairs.
vi) Change the loan repayment schedule.
vii) Provide loans under special consideration to flood-affected members.
viii) Provide free medicine to the struggling (beggar) members etc.
addition, Grameen Bank constructed 25 cyclone shelters across the coastal belt in the country to provide safe shelter to its disaster-affected borrower members. The list of the cyclone shelters with detailed information is as follows:
